More than 100 faculty, staff, students and alumni crowded around the\u00a0west entrance of the University Center Oct. 8 to watch the unveiling of a 27-year-old time capsule as part of the UCCS Homecoming and 50th<\/sup> anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n

“We’re going to celebrate the future today by celebrating the past,”\u00a0Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said.<\/p>\n

The time capsule was placed beneath the pedestrian spine outside the west doors of the 1988 expansion of the University Center\u00a0on Oct. 1, 1988. Steve Gnadt, former director, University Center, placed the time capsule and was\u00a0present\u00a0for the ceremony and reception.<\/p>\n

Items included, but were not limited to, a CU Gold pennant, ashes from the 1988 Yellowstone forest fire, a Pre-Collegiate development program and a piece of ribbon from the 1988 University Center expansion.<\/p>\n

According to Mary Rupp, archives librarian and digital repository coordinator, Kraemer Family Library, select items from the capsule will be\u00a0on display outside of\u00a0UCCS University Archives on the third floor of the\u00a0Kraemer Family Library. All items will then be added to the archive collections, which are available to all faculty and staff.<\/p>\n

The capsule will be replaced with a new capsule commemorating the university\u2019s 50th<\/sup> anniversary. Attendees were asked to sign commemorative 50th\u00a0<\/sup>anniversary\u00a0wine bottles, and to record their memories of UCCS to be included in the UCCS University Archives oral history collection.<\/p>\n

Homecoming celebrations will continue Oct.9 \u2013 10 with a tailgate before\u00a0Women\u2019s Soccer takes on Colorado Mesa, and Men’s Soccer play\u00a0South Dakota Mines.\u00a0Following the soccer games there will be a fireworks display, a first in UCCS history. Seating in Mountain Lion Stadium is limited, but blankets and chairs are welcome on the field. Family and friends are welcome and parking will be available in Lot 576 or at Lane Center.<\/p>\n
