{"id":202,"date":"2010-01-29T09:41:16","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T16:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=202"},"modified":"2010-02-01T09:41:25","modified_gmt":"2010-02-01T16:41:25","slug":"finals-now-end-on-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=202","title":{"rendered":"Finals now end on Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A UCCS tradition, the so-called \u201cwrap around Monday\u201d finals schedule, ended with the start of the spring semester.<\/p>\n<p>Provost Peg Bacon announced Jan. 5 that finals will begin Monday May 10 and end Saturday May 15. The change eliminated a \u201cwrap around\u201d sixth day of finals caused by the start of classes on Tuesdays following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Such changes were not taken lightly. The issue was widely discussed by Faculty Assembly which recommended the change in May 2009 on a 10-2 vote with seven members of the assembly leadership abstaining.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinals week is difficult enough without having to extend it over the weekend and ask students to come back and take their last final on Monday,\u201d Jacqueline Berning, associate professor, Biology, and past president of Faculty Assembly, said. \u201dHaving a continuous finals week will allow students to finish by Saturday and head home or start a summer job. It is a win-win situation for both students and faculty. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, the feasibility of the concept was examined and various publications such as the Schedule of Courses updated to reflect the change in policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>A UCCS tradition, the so-called \u201cwrap around Monday\u201d finals schedule, ended with the start of the spring semester.
