With expansions to\u00a0student housing and the Recreation and Wellness Center\u00a0well underway, the large cranes that have become synonymous with\u00a0UCCS throughout the Colorado Springs community will soon leave campus.<\/p>\n

University Communications and Media Relations\u2019 Jeff Foster captured the progress this week.<\/p>\n

According to Carolyn Fox, university architect, Facilities Services, construction for the $74.5 million 515-bed expansion of UCCS student housing is on schedule.<\/p>\n

Phase 1, \u00a0which includes La Plata House, Cucharas House and The Roaring Fork dining complex, will be completed by July 31\u00a0and\u00a0will add space for 292 students. The facilities will\u00a0open in August \u00a0and will be ready for students for the fall semester.<\/p>\n

Construction on San Juan House, which is part of a second phase, is underway. Following a topping off ceremony in May, the onsite crane will be dismantled.<\/p>\n

Once the latest housing projects are completed, UCCS will have space for 1,640 students to live on campus.<\/p>\n

Recreation and Wellness Center\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UCCS Recreation and Wellness Center expansion\u00a0made\u00a0noticeable recent progress with the addition of large\u00a0concrete walls.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Charles Cummings, project manager, Facilities Services, the project is on schedule and\u00a0is expected to be completed by mid-fall 2015.<\/p>\n

“All of the precast concrete panels have been installed at the addition so students can see where the new gymnasium will be,” Cummings said. “[Other] recent progress on the Rec Center includes completion of the new SOLE area which is adjacent to the existing building entry… [Next], the entry desk will be relocated to allow construction of the connection between the old and new portions of the building. Please bear with us.”<\/p>\n

According to Cummings, a large\u00a0piece of structural steel will soon be placed on the West Lawn for faculty, staff and students to sign before it is put in to place during the topping off\u00a0ceremony.<\/p>\n
