Ginde’s presentation is based on his research group’s paper on Vitamin D, which was published this year in Annals of Internal Medicine. Vitamin D is believed to be essential to good health, and Ginde’s research deals with Vitamin D blood levels in the US population. The impact of skin color on Vitamin D levels is also part of Ginde’s research.

Ginde’s lecture restores a UCCS academic tradition discontinued during the past two years. The Café Scientifique is an informal gathering of people with a common interest in science, meeting where they can enjoy food, drink and discussion of a science-oriented topic. The program was originally organized by a group of faculty from CU and other institutions along the Front Range as well as science buffs from government and industry. The program usually consists of a lecture from an expert on a contemporary scientific topic followed by questions and answers and general discussion.

“The café hopped around downtown Colorado Springs for a time,” said Tom Huber, professor, Geography and Environmental Studies, and one of the founders of the Café Scientifique. “We’d hold it at places like Poor Richard’s until venues became problematic and the program went on hiatus. With Clyde’s opening, the café will have a permanent home on campus,” he said.

Ginde is representative of a class of experts well-known to the academic community, Huber said.

The Café Scientifique is free and open to the public. Attendees buy their own food and drinks. Huber anticipates the event will be popular and recommends arriving early.

For more information about Ginde’s research, visit http://cafescicolorado.org/Ginde.htm.

For more information about The Café Scientifique contact Huber, thuber@uccs.edu or David Anderson, associate professor, Chemistry, danderso@uccs.edu.

The Café Scientifique is back at UCCS.
