{"id":1775,"date":"2010-09-17T09:27:30","date_gmt":"2010-09-17T15:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=1775"},"modified":"2010-09-17T09:27:30","modified_gmt":"2010-09-17T15:27:30","slug":"cool-science-festival-comes-to-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=1775","title":{"rendered":"Cool Science Festival comes to campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 5,000 budding scientists and science enthusiasts are expected on campus Saturday for the Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education, Colorado Springs Science Center Project, Cool Science Inc., and the Biological Science Curriculum Services will offer a day of free community activities designed to engage all ages in science and technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have science shows, a Science Carnival with over 50 hands-on activities, open UCCS laboratories, science fair projects, community organizations, speakers on topics from eugenics to wolves and even a physics band,\u201d Steve Rothstein of the Colorado Springs Science Center Project said. \u201cEveryone\u2019s invited. You\u2019ll have a blast and, no doubt, learn something about the amazing world around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 10 a.m., science education expert Steve Spangler will demonstrate his zany experiments in \u201cExploding Soda and Flying Potatoes\u201d. Formerly a Denver-area science teacher, Spangler is now well known for national appearances, teacher training camps and popular educational toys.<\/p>\n<p>More science fun will be on stage at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with two Magic of Chemistry shows by the Ron Furstenau, assistant professor, Chemistry, U.S. Air Force Academy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChemistry is all about \u2018stuff\u2019, how it looks, feels, smells and works,\u201d Furstenau said. \u201cIn our show, we\u2019ll explore lots of different \u2018stuff\u2019 that looks like magic, but it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Local engineer, author and women-in-science mentor Jill Tietjen will give the festival\u2019s keynote address at 12:30 p.m. \u201cDiscovering Scientific, Technical, Engineering and Mathematical Women<em> \u2014<\/em> The accomplishments of pioneering women engineers, scientists, and inventors over the course of U.S. history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 2 p.m. on the University Center Upper Plaza, the UCCS UCCS Physics Classic Rock and Roll Orchestra will perform.
