UCCS is introducing an innovative interdisciplinary certificate for undergraduate students interested in making a meaningful impact in the nonprofit sector. Nonprofit organizations need talented, compassionate, ethical and resilient managers and leaders versed in the unique management challenges of the nonprofit sector. This fall, the new Religion and Nonprofits Certificate<\/a> equips undergraduates with the knowledge and skills to navigate and thrive in nonprofit work. The Religion and Nonprofits Certificate, a collaboration between the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences (LAS) and the College of Public Service (CPS), was co-developed by Jeff Scholes, Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Jessica Berrett, Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Management in the College of Public Service, and Regina Winters, Associate Dean of the College of Public Service and Teaching Professor in the Master of Public Administration program. This unique certificate integrates religious literacy with practical nonprofit skills, preparing students for careers in nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nonprofits play a vital role in serving communities, and many of their guiding principles are rooted in ethical and religious traditions. While this certificate is not limited to students pursuing careers in faith-based organizations\u2014of which there are many in Colorado Springs\u2014understanding world religions, ethical frameworks, and the motivations behind charitable giving provides students with valuable insights into working with diverse populations. Whether interacting with donors, volunteers, or those in need, a deep understanding of religious and cultural perspectives can enhance a nonprofit professional\u2019s ability to build relationships, foster trust, and drive impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA level of religious literacy is now necessary for nonprofit professionals, whether working in a religious or non-religious organization. This certificate ensures that students not only understand the role of religion in society but also develop the leadership and organizational skills necessary for effective nonprofit work,\u201d said Scholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Religion and Nonprofit Certificate is designed for current undergraduate students as part of their degree program and cannot be taken as a standalone certificate. The curriculum consists of four courses plus an internship. The Department of Public Administration will provide courses on nonprofit engagement and leadership resilience, and the Department of Philosophy will offer courses that explore religion in general as well as ethical considerations specific to the nonprofit sector. The required internship component gives students hands-on experience in nonprofit settings, helping them build professional connections before graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust as the nonprofit sector is diverse and interdisciplinary, it\u2019s only fitting that this new certificate reflects that same approach. I\u2019m excited about this collaboration\u2014it\u2019s the first of its kind across campus,\u201d said Berrett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graduates of this certificate will gain valuable knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them for roles in nonprofit organizations, philanthropy, social services, and community outreach. The interdisciplinary approach helps students develop a strong foundation in nonprofit work and positions them for future growth in the sector. In addition, this certificate will help strengthen the bond between UCCS and the local community, as several nonprofit organizations have already expressed excitement about this venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wish I had taken these courses before my first nonprofit job. I can only imagine how much easier my first year would have been if I had had more communication and project management skills and had known how to deal with tough cases more effectively before working in the field,\u201d said Winters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
