The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion<\/a> (DEI) is launching two new series: an “Inclusive Belonging Spotlight Series” and “DEI Munch & Learns.” These aim to \u200bcreate \u200bdevelopment opportunities and share \u200bresources around \u200bDEI \u200btopics \u200bfor \u200bfaculty, staff, students and the campus community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The \u200bidea \u200bbehind \u200bthese \u200btwo \u200bseries \u200bis \u200bto \u200bcreate \u200bdevelopment \u200bopportunities \u200band resources around \u200bDEI \u200btopics \u200bfor \u200bfaculty \u200band \u200bstaff, but \u200b\u200banyone \u200bcan \u200battend. \u200bStudents, \u200balumni, \u200bcommunity \u200bmembers, \u200bguests – they’re open to all,” said Sloan Gonzales<\/a>, Director of DEI Education and Outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Inclusive Belonging Spotlight Series is a monthly focus on a campus community member and \u200bthe \u200bwork \u200bthey \u200bare \u200bdoing \u200bto \u200bcreate \u200binclusive \u200bbelonging \u200bat \u200bUCCS, like services for undocumented students or DEI efforts within the various departments. Most will take place on the first Friday of each month over coffee and pastries, with the option to attend either in person or virtually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gonzales established this series to better highlight divisions and groups on campus after discovering how many were making efforts, often unseen, to incorporate DEI into their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When \u200bI \u200bfirst came into this role, I went on a ‘listening & \u200blearning \u200btour’ of campus and met with anyone I could and asked them ‘\u200btell \u200bme \u200bwhat \u200bDEI means to you. \u200bWhat \u200bdo \u200byou \u200bwant \u200bfor \u200bcampus? \u200bWhat \u200bare \u200byou \u200bcurrently \u200bdoing with DEI efforts?'” explained Gonzales. “\u200bI \u200blearned \u200bthere \u200bwere \u200bpockets \u200ball \u200bover \u200bour \u200bcampus \u200bwith \u200bpeople doing \u200bphenomenal \u200bDEI \u200bwork \u200bthat \u200bno \u200bone \u200bknew \u200babout, \u200blike \u200bweaving \u200bDEI\u200b into \u200bsustainability \u200befforts \u200bor \u200bteaching \u200ba \u200bvery \u200bunique \u200bclass. \u200bThere \u200bwere \u200ball \u200bthese \u200blittle \u200bpockets \u200band \u200bI \u200bwanted \u200bto \u200bcreate \u200bsomething \u200bthat \u200belevated \u200bthose \u200bindividuals and \u200bdepartments.”<\/p>\n\n\n

The DEI Munch & Learn series focuses on \u200bthe \u200bcore \u200bheritage \u200band \u200bidentity-centric \u200bmonths celebrated at UCCS, with a minimum of one heritage or identity highlighted monthly, starting with National Latinx Heritage Month. This series has three core aspects within each session: an expert in the topic speaking about the heritage or identity’s history and why it\u2019s celebrated, a corresponding food experience and significant resource sharing, like this Latinx Heritage Month resource guide<\/a> that has several options and mediums for learning and participating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For those that may not be able to attend events or actively participate, I \u200bwanted \u200bto \u200bcreate \u200ba \u200bmore \u200bpassive \u200bway \u200bfor \u200bpeople \u200bto \u200bconnect \u200band \u200bengage \u200bwith \u200bHeritage \u200bMonth, so we \u200bare \u200blaunching \u200b\u200bnew \u200bHeritage \u200bMonth \u200bresource \u200bpages,” said Gonzales. “These \u200bfeature \u200beverything from podcasts, films, poems and \u200barticles to \u200blocal \u200bbusinesses and \u200borganizations \u200bthat \u200byou \u200bcan \u200bconnect \u200bwith, \u200ball \u200bon \u200bthe \u200bUCCS \u200bwebsite.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next Inclusive Belonging Spotlight Series event is Oct. 13 and features speaker Konrad Schlarbaum<\/a>, Director of the Sustainability Office<\/a>, and the next DEI Munch & Learn takes place on Sept. 22 and features Julie Torres<\/a>, Assistant Professor in Women’s and Ethnic Studies<\/a>, speaking on Latinx Heritage Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are overjoyed to see the positive impact of bringing our campus together and creating authentic spaces that celebrate diverse cultures and promote global learning and engagement,” said Rame Hanna, Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
