Jeff Spicher, director, UCCS HealthCircle Primary Care Clinic, received the Outstanding Faculty Practice Award from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties April 5 in Denver.<\/p>\n

The Washington, D.C.-based NONPF honored Spicher as the top nursing faculty practice member in the nation. The award criteria included maintaining an active nurse practitioner practice, demonstrated creative teaching approaches, excellence in integrating practice and faculty roles, and high standards.<\/p>\n

Spicher was the only award recipient.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeff Spicher\u2019s work inside and outside of the classroom is outstanding as judged by his peers,\u201d Nancy Smith, dean, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, said. \u201cHe was selected for this award from all nurse practitioner faculty in the country, a testament to his excellence and the high-quality faculty of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spicher was nominated for the award by Amy Silva Smith, associate professor, and Vicki Brownrigg, assistant professor, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences.\u00a0 Silva-Smith cited Spicher\u2019s previous efforts with the UCCS Student Health Center, an innovative El Paso County\/City of Colorado Springs Employee Health Clinic, his vision for the UCCS HealthCircle Primary Care Clinic, and excellence in teaching.<\/p>\n

The UCCS HealthCircle Primary Care Clinic opened in March to UCCS faculty and staff in the Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences. The clinic is a leading edge primary care practice managed by the professionally licensed \u00a0nurse practitioner faculty from the UCCS Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences. It is believed to be the only clinic of its kind in Colorado.<\/p>\n

The UCCS HealthCircle Primary Care Clinic incorporates the best traditions from medicine and nursing practice. Providers spend more time with individual patients and incorporate a preventive and patient-focused approach to primary healthcare. The Primary Care Clinic incorporates behavioral and mental health services within the primary care model to promote wellness and disease management from a whole-person perspective attempting to deliver stronger long-term patient outcomes.<\/p>\n

Spicher joined the UCCS faculty in 2002 and previously worked in a family practice clinic in Pennsylvania. He was instrumental in starting the County-City Medical Clinic, a partnership with El Paso County and the City of Colorado Springs, providing primary healthcare services to county employees and their dependents. He served as the director of this clinic from 2004 until 2008 and previously practiced in the UCCS Student Health Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner, diagnosing and treating university students.<\/p>\n

He previously taught in the UCCS Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctorate of Nursing Practice program and the nurse practitioner program and continues to precept nurse practitioner students in the clinical setting. He presents regularly on subjects including on men\u2019s health, empowering patients, and models for healthcare. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Nurses Association, Colorado Nurses Association, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. His awards include recognition as an Emerging Leader in the University of Colorado system (2010-2011), Nightingale Finalist for Excellence in Professional Nursing Practice (2007), and as the Instructor of the Year for the UCCS Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences (2004).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
