{"id":146185,"date":"2023-03-20T17:14:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T23:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=146185"},"modified":"2023-03-20T17:14:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T23:14:01","slug":"smith-earns-fulbright-to-continue-anthropological-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=146185","title":{"rendered":"Smith earns Fulbright to continue anthropological research"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/KimbraSmithHeadshot.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146206\" width=\"313\" height=\"417\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/anthropology.uccs.edu\/staff\/kimbra-smith-phd\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/anthropology.uccs.edu\/staff\/kimbra-smith-phd\" target=\"_blank\">Kimbra Smith<\/a>, Associate Professor of Anthropology, is preparing to return to Ecuador for a second time as a Fulbright Scholar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith will spend four months in the Manab\u00ed province, on the coast of Ecuador, working within indigenous communities in the Buenavista River Valley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This program continues Smith&#8217;s work of over two decades conducting archaeological, ethnographic and ethnohistorical research with indigenous communities of southern Manab\u00ed, including a previous Fulbright award in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current project Smith is working on involves collaboration with the Museum of Agua Blanca, a community-based local history museum in Manab\u00ed. Together, they&#8217;re creating an interactive digital exhibit using <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-storymaps\/overview\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-storymaps\/overview\" target=\"_blank\">ArcGIS StoryMaps<\/a>, a program that enables storytelling through the use of multiple media and interactive components, that highlights the history, cultural practices and social interconnections of the Buenavista River Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I\u2019m very excited to be able to spend an extended period of time working with the communities in the valley and finding ways for the research I\u2019ve done to support the people there,&#8221; said Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith isn&#8217;t stopping there. Along with co-developing and installing the exhibits, she&#8217;ll be establishing interactive narrative genealogy for community use and developing methodological tools for similar projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, she&#8217;s continuing work on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southeastexpress.org\/features\/highfive\/uccs-professor-collecting-invisible-histories-of-colorado-springs\/article_818cdc6a-073e-11eb-8ab5-77e08bb2d50f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Revealing Invisible Histories of Colorado Springs&#8221;<\/a> initiative, a community-based digital humanities project that incorporates students and local community members here into researching often-untold aspects of local history that highlight how many diverse voices and experiences interconnected to create the city we live in today, and finishing her in-progress novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out Smith&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=131382\">Faculty Feature<\/a> to learn more about her research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers more than 400 different opportunities to teach, research and conduct professional projects in over 135 countries.
