{"id":14377,"date":"2014-03-13T16:48:51","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T22:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=14377"},"modified":"2015-10-08T12:17:50","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T18:17:50","slug":"clydes-cupboard-provides-students-in-need-an-on-campus-food-option","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=14377","title":{"rendered":"Clyde\u2019s Cupboard provides needy students free food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Clyde\u2019s Cupboard, the first UCCS on-campus student food bank, opened its doors March 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14414\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_3835.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14414\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_3835-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3835\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clyde&#8217;s Cupboard is located in the Student Life and Leadership Office<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Located in the Student Life and Leadership Office within the University Center, Clyde\u2019s Cupboard will offer students a viable source of food that they may not otherwise have access to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have students that don\u2019t qualify for financial assistance or need-based programs that still don\u2019t know what they\u2019re going to have for dinner,\u201d Amanda Koback, program manager, Office of the Dean of Students, said. \u201cOur goal is to fill that need and to help our students however we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14415\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14415\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_3824.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14415\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_3824-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3824\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14415\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students are able to select food from five sections: protein, fruits and vegetables, condiments, on-the-go snacks, and breakfast items<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Currently, the cupboard is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and includes five sections: protein, fruits and vegetables, condiments, on-the-go snacks, and breakfast items. Students are able to select two items from each of the first three sections, and one item from the last two, once a week.<\/p>\n<p>Students wanting to access the food bank will need to show their student ID card, and on the first visit complete a check-in sheet. According to Koback,\u00a0the form is to verify enrollment and to assess needs.<\/p>\n<p>While Clyde\u2019s Cupboard may be the first on-campus food bank, the program has been in the works for some time. The group focused on UCCS and a number of potential organizations including a student community center, food bank, community theater, a student guide and student veteran resources. Of the topics, the food bank received the most support.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the Office of the Dean of Students, the UCCS Career Center, the Anthropology Club and the Office of Student Life and Leadership, the project soon took shape.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Jaramillo, senior anthropology major, and chair of the Anthropology Club, believes Clyde\u2019s Cupboard is a way for the UCCS community to take care of each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClyde&#8217;s Cupboard is a way we can create community and a feeling that we care and will help fellow students in need,\u201d Jaramillo said. \u201cThis is our chance to show that we\u2019re not just defined by our academics but by our humanity. Creating a caring community will teach us lessons that are not often taught in class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Faculty, staff and students can help by spreading the word and by donating non-perishable food items.
