Better dressed, more available, how can we make today\u2019s men evolve?\u201d Proby asked himself, leading to the creation of a new nonprofit for\u00a0men in Colorado Springs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proby thought many communities, much like Colorado Springs, weren\u2019t offering support for men down on their luck. He remedied that with his now successful storefront called the Men\u2019s Xchange.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Proby was already a successful business owner and a member of the Pikes Peak Regional Workforce. The idea for\u00a0Men\u2019s\u00a0Xchange\u00a0burst\u00a0forth while he sought training to teach an entrepreneurial class.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI saw this need that wasn\u2019t being met in our community, and we wanted to provide something brand new,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re pioneers stepping into a whole new space. It\u2019s exciting and scary. You don\u2019t have a blueprint for what to do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proby provides clean, pressed suits at $40 per person, along with a tailoring service. For those who can\u2019t afford $40, he clothes one person for free with every 10 suits he sells.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had amazing success stories, and as I talk about them, I always get emotional. Most of these men have gone from being unemployed to\u00a0employed,\u201d Proby said, noting the shop is serving more than 30 men per month and continues to grow. \u201cTwo have gone from being homeless to being in their own homes and employed.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He credits his path to UCCS, noting connections he made while earning a Bachelor of Communication afforded him his first job offer. But UCCS faculty provided more than just a start. They helped him learn after being diagnosed with something that had hampered his education for years: dyslexia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proby first learned he had dyslexia while in community college, and he found the right style of learning at UCCS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI came to UCCS and was able to take untimed tests, and it took the pressure off me,\u201d he said. \u201cIt really did make a gigantic difference.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proby said his professors were compassionate, propelling him forward to graduation in 1996.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was directly because of UCCS that I got my first job offer,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Connecting with people who were open-minded and diverse really made the experience at UCCS amazing for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skills he developed on campus still help him as he curates a community around his nonprofit, which benefits veterans, the homeless and others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverything I do is all about the interpersonal communication process,\u201d&nbsp;he said. \u201cHow we\u2019re speaking to our customers and helping them is 100 percent of what we do. Communication skills are the best thing I got out of UCCS.
