{"id":136678,"date":"2021-12-17T16:54:07","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T23:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=136678"},"modified":"2022-01-06T12:25:39","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T19:25:39","slug":"uccs-celebrates-fall-class-of-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=136678","title":{"rendered":"UCCS celebrates fall Class of 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8685-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8685-2-750x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8685-2-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8685-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8685-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8685-2-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>UCCS celebrates the fall Class of 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UCCS conferred&nbsp;nearly 1,100&nbsp;degrees to students during the&nbsp;first in-person Commencement ceremonies held since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UCCS awarded 20 doctoral degrees, 256 master\u2019s degrees and 817 bachelor\u2019s degrees to graduates of the fall and summer 2021 semesters during the Dec. 17 event, hosted at the Broadmoor World Arena.&nbsp;More than&nbsp;600 graduates and their families celebrated alongside UCCS faculty,&nbsp;staff&nbsp;and students, including more&nbsp;than 40 graduates from&nbsp;the Classes of 2020 and spring Class of 2021, who returned to walk across the Commencement stage after having celebrated their graduation virtually.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8820.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8820-750x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136735\" width=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8820-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8820-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8820-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8820-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venkat Reddy,&nbsp;Chancellor of UCCS,&nbsp;Todd&nbsp;Saliman, President of the University of Colorado system,&nbsp;and this year\u2019s&nbsp;distinguished alumna&nbsp;speaker,&nbsp;Jill Schramm \u201906, \u201909, each shared words of wisdom with the new graduates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have assembled here today a microcosm of our entire world,\u201d said&nbsp;Reddy in his opening remarks.&nbsp;\u201cOur graduates represent states from across our great nation and countries from across the globe.&nbsp;As you graduate today, you will go back out into the world \u2013 using the work of your minds and your hearts to make it a better place.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGraduates,&nbsp;you rose above every single setback you faced,\u201d Reddy continued.&nbsp;\u201cYou demonstrated courage and resilience, and you did not give up on your dreams.&nbsp;Your triumph today is not just that you have succeeded in the face of difficulty&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;it is that you are stronger and better equipped to take on any obstacle that may come your way.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUntil now, so much of your life has been planned for you. But now, you have the reins,\u201d&nbsp;Saliman&nbsp;told graduates. \u201cThere\u2019s a great world waiting for you.&nbsp;And guess what?&nbsp;You\u2019re ready for it.&nbsp;I&nbsp;know the unknown can be daunting.&nbsp;It&nbsp;can also be spectacular.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the ceremony\u2019s keynote speech, Schramm,&nbsp;a graduate of the&nbsp;inaugural&nbsp;Doctor of Nursing Practice program at UCCS&nbsp;and&nbsp;a nationally recognized diabetes and chronic disease specialist, told the story of a rural Midwestern upbringing that instilled in her the importance of hard work.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her advice to graduates hinged on self-reflection.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLife will get very busy in the next few years,\u201d Schramm said. \u201cYou may land your dream job right out of college. Others may move on to new jobs more quickly.&nbsp;As you venture into this next chapter of your life, reflect on your passion and what is important for you and create a vision statement for yourself.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA&nbsp;personal vision statement will provide you a clear sense of direction when your path seems uncertain,\u201d Schramm said.&nbsp;\u201cIt can help you to decide what to say&nbsp;\u2018yes\u2019&nbsp;to and what to say&nbsp;\u2018no\u2019&nbsp;to.&nbsp;That vision statement should come from your heart center,&nbsp;where your passion and purpose lie.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8682.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8682-750x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136734\" width=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8682-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8682-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8682-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_8682-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ceremony included a celebration of nine Silver Graduates, members of the Class of 1996 who celebrated a 25-year milestone from their own UCCS graduation. It also recognized new inductees into the&nbsp;1965 Main Hall Society: Kevin&nbsp;W.&nbsp;O\u2019Neil&nbsp;\u201989 and Thomas and&nbsp;Nancy&nbsp;Arata. The Main Hall Society celebrates&nbsp;individuals&nbsp;whose lifetime giving&nbsp;has&nbsp;supported the campus in significant ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To close the ceremonies,&nbsp;Allen Schoffstall, Professor&nbsp;of&nbsp;Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry&nbsp;and a 55-year veteran of the UCCS faculty, delivered the traditional&nbsp;Norlin&nbsp;Charge to graduates. The charge is steeped in CU\u2019s history, dating back to CU Boulder\u2019s June 1935 CU Boulder commencement ceremony, when&nbsp;president&nbsp;George&nbsp;Norlin&nbsp;delivered the speech to graduates. The words&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Norlin&nbsp;Charge&nbsp;are now&nbsp;read to the graduating class each year at each of the four CU campuses&nbsp;as&nbsp;a reminder that graduates will carry their experiences at the university with them forever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommencement does not mean, as many wrongly think, the breaking of ties and the beginning of life apart,\u201d reads the charge. \u201cRather, it marks your initiation in the fullest sense into the fellowship of the university, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, as promoters of her spirit.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe university consists of all who come into and go forth from her halls, who are touched by her influence and who carry on her spirit. Wherever you go, the university goes with you. Wherever you are at work, there is the university at work.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the UCCS Fall and Summer 2021 Commencement Ceremonies&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UCCS\u00a0fall 2021 Commencement ceremonies celebrated\u00a01,086 graduates of the summer and fall semesters.
