This October, walking, hiking and exploring nature earned students points and prizes through the Walking for PIPs Challenge.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years,\u00a0Walktober\u00a0has\u00a0been a\u00a0celebrated\u00a0tradition on campus and\u00a0seen many iterations,\u00a0all with the goal of encouraging the campus community to\u00a0integrate healthy habits into daily routines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the second year of the PIPs\u00a0Walktober\u00a0Challenge, ended it saw a 56 percent participation increase from 2020. Collectively, 266 UCCS students walked over 25,000 miles,\u00a0amounting to\u00a056.6 million steps, and\u00a0earned close to 140,000 PIPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PIPs\u00a0Walktober\u00a0Challenge awarded\u00a0participants\u00a0that\u00a0reached\u00a08,000 and 12,000 steps\u00a0daily\u00a0throughout the week. In addition to these individual prizes,\u00a0participants were eligible for\u00a0four prizes\u00a0to earn extra PIPs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The winners include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Most steps in a day:\u00a0<\/strong>Joseph Pick with 55,936 steps in a single day\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Participant who reached 8,000 steps 15 times during the month<\/strong>:\u00a0Hannah\u00a0Taff, who won a drawing for the most consistent average<\/li><li><strong>Most steps overall:<\/strong> Emma Finchum with 461,657 steps overall\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Drawing for any student who reached 12,000 steps four times during the month:<\/strong>\u00a0Marissa Benavidez\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We wanted to learn a little bit more about our\u00a0Walktober\u00a0winners, so asked them the following questions:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marissa Benavidez\u00a0&#8217;25 |\u00a0Biology major with a\u00a0Leadership minor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136621\" width=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1-1.png 408w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1-1-300x450.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where is your favorite place to walk on campus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My favorite place to walk is through the bluffs. It&#8217;s the trails behind campus and it&#8217;s very pretty during fall because you can see all the changing leaves throughout the city once you get to the top trails.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other than walking, what was your favorite way to get in steps?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I mostly only walk! I do go to the Rec Center about once a week, but it isn&#8217;t much.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other than exercise, what other benefits did you get from participating in\u00a0Walktober?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think walking and getting outside helps a lot with my mental health, because I can take a break from thinking about school\u00a0and also\u00a0get fresh air!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Did the challenge of\u00a0Walktober\u00a0help you reach any self-set goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t have any goals before\u00a0Walktober\u00a0but this event did motivate me a lot more to walk. For example, when\u00a0I would\u00a0go to The Fork or to my car in Alpine Garage, I would walk instead of taking the shuttle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hannah\u00a0Taff\u00a0&#8217;25 | Physics major<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136622\" width=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2-1.png 408w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2-1-300x450.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where is your favorite place to walk on campus?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My favorite place to walk on campus is along my route to my evening classes, because it has a really nice view of the sunset and the mountains!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other than walking, what was your favorite way to get in steps?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also like to play volleyball on the outdoor turf court in Alpine Village; it\u2019s a nice way to end the day and a fun way to get in extra exercise.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other than exercise, what other benefits did you get from participating in\u00a0Walktober?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Having a goal set for each day made me feel more motivated, not just to walk, but to accomplish my other tasks for the day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Did the challenge of\u00a0Walktober\u00a0help you reach any self-set goals?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I didn\u2019t have any goals initially but after a week or so of participating in the challenge, I found myself wanting to be more consistently active and even looking forward to walking around campus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What can you do to keep the spirit of\u00a0Walktober\u00a0alive through the rest of 2021 and into 2022?\u00a0Many people stress about maintaining their health routine over the holidays\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0large meals and festive desserts. This year, consider ways to\u00a0add\u00a0healthy habits into your routine over the holidays, such as drinking more water,\u00a0getting rest,\u00a0spending\u00a0quality time with friends,\u00a0setting healthy boundaries \u2014 and yes, walking!\u00a0By setting daily or weekly step goals, you will be setting healthy habits that encourage you to move more and may help you find positive ways to manage stress, create\u00a0connection and try new things.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the PIPs Program at UCCS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PIPs program encourages students to take actions that focus on their entire person and support their overall wellness, including in areas such as academic excellence, mental health, social connectedness, community involvement and physical wellbeing.
