{"id":1340,"date":"2010-07-28T15:50:49","date_gmt":"2010-07-28T21:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=1340"},"modified":"2010-07-28T15:50:49","modified_gmt":"2010-07-28T21:50:49","slug":"uccs-to-receive-steel-silver-series-trophy-sept-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=1340","title":{"rendered":"UCCS to receive Steel &#038; Silver Series trophy Sept. 22"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between games of a Sept. 22 soccer doubleheader, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will be awarded the trophy for winning the 2009-10 Steel &amp; Silver Series.<\/p>\n<p>Shockley-Zalabak will accept the trophy from Colorado State-Pueblo President Joseph Garcia between the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s soccer matches between UCCS and CSU-Pueblo at approximately 6:50 p.m. Ent Federal Credit Union sponsors the competition and the trophy bears its name.<\/p>\n<p>The contest awards points to the winner of games between the schools in seven women\u2019s and three men\u2019s sports and a five-point bonus to the university whose student-athletes have the best grades. Mountain Lion teams won this year\u2019s contest with a score of 29-16, including the coveted five-point grade bonus. UCCS teams prevailed in women\u2019s volleyball, men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s soccer, women\u2019s cross country and men\u2019s golf. CSU-Pueblo teams prevailed in women\u2019s basketball and women&#8217;s indoor and outdoor track. The schools were even in men\u2019s basketball and softball.<\/p>\n<p>The traveling trophy, created by Joan Aaland of Colorado Springs, is an 18-inch-high, 80-pound bronze and mahogany trophy that features a beam representing Pueblo\u2019s steel production history and a pick axe representing the mining history of Colorado Springs with a wolf and a mountain lion, team mascots. The trophy is awarded to the annual winner of the series. UCCS has won the Steel &amp; Silver Series in each of its five years of existence.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Shockley-Zalabak and Garcia, representatives from Mountain Lion and Thunderwolf athletic programs will attend in addition to other university officials<\/p>\n<p>The Steel and Silver series was named in recognition of the economic history of the cities where the universities are located. Pueblo was one of the largest steel production centers in the West, while Colorado Springs served as a hub for the hard-rock miners in the area.<\/p>\n<p>UCCS fields 13 men\u2019s and women\u2019s NCAA Division II athletic teams and is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
