{"id":132991,"date":"2021-05-28T09:18:18","date_gmt":"2021-05-28T15:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=132991"},"modified":"2021-05-28T10:17:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-28T16:17:33","slug":"employee-of-the-quarter-mike-sanderson-is-uccs-carbon-monoxide-detector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=132991","title":{"rendered":"Employee of the Quarter Mike Sanderson is &#8220;UCCS&#8217; carbon monoxide detector&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/osp.uccs.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Mike-MBA-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-133019\" width=\"300\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Mike-MBA-6.jpg 427w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Mike-MBA-6-300x450.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Mike Sanderson does his job right, nobody hears about it \u2013&nbsp;because nothing happened in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the beauty of a position in compliance, says Sanderson, who is the associate director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Integrity and the winner of the spring 2021 Employee of the Quarter Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanderson\u2019s work stretches across not just the UCCS campus and the University of Colorado system, but also the globe. He works with researchers both on campus and abroad, often helping them to navigate complex regulations \u2013\u00a0which are frequently written for corporations and federal departments \u2013 and put them into practice at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMike is akin to the carbon monoxide detector in your home,\u201d wrote Jessi Smith, associate director of research in a letter supporting Sanderson\u2019s nomination. \u201cHis job is to detect what the rest of us can\u2019t see before we feel sick. And he is vitally important to the health and wellbeing of our campus \u2013&nbsp;quietly and reliably making sure the rest of us can work and learn with peace of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are thousands of compliance professionals out there who have prevented a major regulatory or ethical event from ever happening. We try and make sure that nothing happens while limiting the impact on research,&#8221; Sanderson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If we do the job right, nobody ever knows that nothing happened,\u201d Sanderson jokes. &#8220;We walk a fine line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanderson is a UCCS alumnus, having received his MBA in 2009. He has held multiple roles at UCCS, first taking a graduate internship with the UCCS Career Center, then a full-time role as a coordinator of research compliance in the UCCS Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Integrity. He has also worked across the CU system, having served at CU Boulder as a research integrity and compliance quality assurance coordinator and having spent time working on the CU Anschutz campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/compliance.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-132994\" width=\"350\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/compliance.png 497w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/compliance-300x232.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption>Sanderson frequently sends the meme above to new compliance officers to describe the &#8220;fine line&#8221; they walk in their work.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His current work is deeply important to the university. With a foundation in teaching and research, UCCS\u2019 mission \u2013&nbsp;and its 2030 Strategic Plan \u2013&nbsp;rest on generating new knowledge through research and creative works for the benefit of students and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also important for the Colorado Springs community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur research ripples out into the community in a lot of different ways,\u201d Sanderson said. \u201cWe have researchers that work with our military community, our aging community, and who specifically work and collaborate with small businesses in the city. Our researchers are really dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for Sanderson \u2013 a Colorado Springs native and the child of a military family \u2013&nbsp;seeing those positive effects ripple through the community is its own reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of my favorite parts of the job is when we\u2019re able to support faculty to get something done that\u2019s really beneficial to our community,\u201d Sanderson said. \u201cWorking with our researchers who deal with homeless veterans, or student health, is really rewarding. Knowing that we\u2019re playing a small piece in that work, and supporting it in the best way we can, feels important.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In recognition of his efforts, Sanderson will receive one day of administrative leave, a $100 stipend, three months of a free and reserved parking space when normal campus operations have resumed and a $40 voucher to the UCCS Bookstore.
