{"id":13295,"date":"2013-12-12T14:20:25","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T21:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=13295"},"modified":"2018-01-12T08:56:23","modified_gmt":"2018-01-12T15:56:23","slug":"officer-darnall-receives-uccs-medal-of-honor-at-public-safety-award-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=13295","title":{"rendered":"Officer Darnall receives UCCS Medal of Honor at Public Safety award ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_13298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13298\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DPSawards8.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13298\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DPSawards8-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Larry Darnall accepts the UCCS Medal of Honor\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Larry Darnall accepts the UCCS Medal of Honor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Officer Larry Darnall, Department of Public Safety, received the UCCS Medal of Honor for his actions during the Black Forest Fire at a Dec. 11 awards luncheon.<\/p>\n<p>The award is given to UCCS police officers who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary heroism beyond normal demands, and in such a way that they were fully aware of the imminent threat to their safety.<\/p>\n<p>According to Brian McPike, interim chief of police, Department of Public Safety,\u00a0Darnall was one of seven UCCS police officers to volunteer in assisting local first responders with emergency evacuations, traffic control and security.<\/p>\n<p>While working with El Paso County Sheriff&#8217;s Office and the Colorado Springs Police Department, the fire breached containment lines, cutting off Darnall and a number of CSPD officers.<\/p>\n<p>Darnall was able to evacuate the CSPD officers in his cruiser after the flames\u00a0consumed the CSPD vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe rescued so many people that they had to ride out on the hood of his car,\u201d McPike said. \u201cOfficer Darnall\u2019s actions that day no doubt had a direct impact on many people\u2019s lives and property.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13297\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13297\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DPSawards7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13297\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DPSawards7-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"McPikes recognizes Darnall's achievements during the Black Forest Fire\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">McPikes recognizes Darnall&#8217;s achievements during the Black Forest Fire<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McPike said he received multiple calls from individuals thanking him for UCCS PD\u2019s participation, including from Pete Carey, police chief, Colorado Springs Police Department, and El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa. Darnall was also recognized on television when Colorado Army National Guard Lt. Col. Mitch Utterback thanked him for escorting him through the fire zone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never been in a situation like that as a cop,\u201d McPike said. \u201cIf asked, hopefully I\u2019d have the courage to do that. But I can tell you that Larry did it, and we\u2019re here to honor those selfless acts in a highly dangerous and volatile situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darnall is the first UCCS police officer to be awarded the Medal of Honor, the department\u2019s second highest award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Others receiving awards were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Employee of the Year.\u00a0<\/strong> Awarded for consistently exceeding expectations in the areas of customer service, quality of work, teamwork and positive attitude.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Honn, environmental health and safety manager, Department of Public Safety\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DPSawards5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DPSawards5-555x369.jpg\" alt=\"DPSawards5\" width=\"555\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Craig Highline Award.<\/strong> Awarded to officers for outstanding achievement in the areas of impaired driving enforcement and education.
