Photo credit:&nbsp;Fabrice Coffrini via Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When three female German gymnasts wore full-length unitards at the European Gymnastics Championships held in Switzerland last week, they were delivering more than a fashion statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Elizabeth Daniels, associate professor of psychology, the ankle-length Spandex unitards could be the beginning of a cultural reckoning on the sexualization of female athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniels spoke to Lulu Garcia-Navarro, host of National Public Radio&#8217;s Weekend Edition Sunday, on international conversations around the sexual objectification of athletes and the psychological effects of female athletes\u2019 uniforms on performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere&#8217;s always been a perception that sport is a male-typed domain and that women need to pay attention to demonstrating femininity, because they&#8217;re involved in a male activity,\u201d Daniels explained. \u201cAnd so we see, all the way back to the 1920s, examples of women&#8217;s sport teams being sexualized in an attempt to sort of nod towards femininity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re at the point where there&#8217;s a bit of a cultural reckoning where that&#8217;s being questioned by women in sports,\u201d Daniels continued. \u201cWhere we&#8217;re seeing athletes speaking out about uniforms, it really could be symbolic of the need for athletes to have more voice in general.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-text-color\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/transcripts\/992566981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Listen to the full segment on NPR<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elizabeth Daniels is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
