A faculty member at the University of Michigan\u2019s Population Studies Center will speak about people, agriculture and environmental changes beginning at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 13 in University Center 302.<\/p>\n

Myron Gutmann, a professor of history and information at the University of Michigan and a research professor at Michigan\u2019s Population Studies Center, will present \u201cAgricultural Greenhouse Gas Production and the Web Population in the U.S. Great Plains.\u201d In his symposium, Gutmann will share the results of his 18-year multi-site research program about population, agriculture and environmental change.<\/p>\n

Gutmann\u2019s research shows how demographic and agricultural change both respond to environmental conditions and shape environmental outcomes, according to Emily Skop, assistant professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.<\/p>\n

The symposium is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 13. At 2 p.m., Dec. 13, Gutmann will present \u201cNavigating the National Science Foundation\u201d in Dwire Hall 204.<\/p>\n

UCCS faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the free events. A complimentary lunch will be provided between the symposium and the workshop in Dwire Hall 204.<\/p>\n

Gutmann\u2019s visit is sponsored by the Social Science Symposium Series, the UCCS Graduate School, and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.<\/p>\n

Gutmann previously served as an assistant director of the National Science Foundation and headed the NSF directorate for social, behavior, and economic sciences. NSF is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering, with an annual budget of $5.92 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to more than 1,700 universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives about 42,000 competitive requests for funding, and makes more than 10,000 new funding awards.<\/p>\n

Prior to joining NSF, Gutmann was director of Michigan\u2019s Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research and a leader in the archiving and dissemination of electronic research materials related to society, population, and health. He is the author or editor of five books and more than 80 articles and chapters and has served on a number of national and international advisory committees and editorial boards.<\/p>\n
