Fall is breeding season for deer. Bucks can be aggressive toward humans if threatened. Their horns and hooves can cause serious injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMales \u2013 bucks \u2013 can be highly aggressive and unpredictable,\u201d Tim Stoecklein, program director, Emergency Management, said. \u201cThere is potential for you to be charged or gored by an aggressive buck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stoecklein recommended giving all deer a wide berth if encountered on campus, advice that he extended to other campus wildlife as well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12870\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12870\" style=\"width: 194px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Buck-on-the-Hill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12870\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Buck-on-the-Hill-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"A buck deer grazes near University Hall.\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A buck deer grazes near University Hall recently.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In past years, bears have been sighted rummaging through garbage cans near student housing, mountain lions have been spotted on the bluffs north of campus and, depending on the time of year, rattlesnakes can be found on campus walking paths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShare the space,\u201d Stoecklein said. \u201cGetting extra close so you can get that great picture might not be good for you or for the animal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Awareness of the issue was also raised by recent accounts of\u00a0the euthanizing of an elk at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee after the animal got too close to people.
