{"id":128642,"date":"2020-11-30T13:43:46","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T20:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=128642"},"modified":"2025-02-20T16:24:15","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T23:24:15","slug":"crafting-a-community-of-culture-jasmine-dillavou","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=128642","title":{"rendered":"Crafting a Community of Culture | Jasmine Dillavou \u201916"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"678\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/dillavou-ss.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-138023\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/dillavou-ss.jpg 678w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/dillavou-ss-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Colorado Springs\u2019 newest artists isn\u2019t one to paint with a broad brush, or even paint&nbsp;much&nbsp;at all.&nbsp;But that hasn\u2019t stopped&nbsp;Jasmine&nbsp;Dillavou&nbsp;\u201916&nbsp;from becoming an agent of change&nbsp;in the community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Becoming a full-time artist just one year removed from her time as a Visual and Performing Arts&nbsp;(VAPA)&nbsp;student&nbsp;at UCCS, Dillavou says she feels incredibly lucky, but also feels an instilled&nbsp;duty to her community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEver since graduating, I feel like I\u2019ve had all this momentum and I don\u2019t want to let it go,\u201d she said just after her latest showcase debuted at the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region (COPPeR). \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between curating shows for local and successful artists and featuring her own&nbsp;sculpting and collage&nbsp;work, Dillavou has helped create and lift off the ground two nonprofits focused on the&nbsp;Colorado Springs&nbsp;community, including GLO, a group focused on supporting women of color, and&nbsp;Non-Book&nbsp;Club Book Club (NBCBC), a group focused on community idea swapping.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAttending UCCS&nbsp;really pushed me to start reaching out to the broader community,&#8221; she said. &#8220;UCCS was my community, and now I\u2019m adjusting to this new world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of her drive to create a&nbsp;tight-knit group&nbsp;of artists and lesser represented community members is due to her upbringing in a household with a single, Latina mother.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been very cool to dive into my heritage through my art and understand my mom\u2019s history&nbsp;and reconnect with my family,&#8221; Dillavou said.&nbsp;&#8220;The base of all my work is&nbsp;about not just telling&nbsp;<em>my<\/em>&nbsp;story&nbsp;but trying to tell the stories that are quieted.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her work keeps her busy, as she says modern artists have to hustle&nbsp;more than ever&nbsp;to make a living. She&nbsp;believes&nbsp;UCCS and the&nbsp;VAPA program prepared her for life after college.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe VAPA&nbsp;program&nbsp;is so real. It\u2019s such a physical&nbsp;program&nbsp;that puts you right in the space, and I didn\u2019t see that at other universities,&#8221; she said.&nbsp;&#8220;It felt like home, if home was a place where they would kick my&nbsp;butt&nbsp;until I made amazing stuff.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She continues to interact with&nbsp;former professors and the campus community. To Dillavou, the community is the most motivating aspect of the university.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUCCS has&nbsp;real people who go to school,&#8221; she said.&nbsp;&#8220;There are activists, working people, diverse groups.\u202fThat\u2019s true all the way through. These are real people. These are my people.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not always easy to be an artist, Dillavou said, so she offered up advice&nbsp;to any person contemplating these studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to push inward but the most important thing is reaching out to your community and asking for help, keeping&nbsp;your&nbsp;feet in&nbsp;the broader&nbsp;community.
