For the third consecutive year, UCCS is one of the nation\u2019s\nmost sustainable higher education institutions, according to the Princeton\nReview Green College Honor Roll and the Sierra Club\u2019s official magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSierra\u201d magazine ranked UCCS the second-most sustainable university in Colorado out of a record 312 institutions in its annual \u201cCool Schools\u201d green ranking<\/a>. UCCS has earned a top-25 ranking in the competition three times since 2017. And as one of 30 institutions named to the Green College Honor Roll<\/a>, UCCS was honored with a score of 99 \u2013 the highest possible score \u2013 in the Princeton Review\u2019s Green Rating tallies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Princeton Review Green College Honor Roll and the\nSierra Club\u2019s \u2018Cool School\u2019 rankings are a reflection of our entire UCCS\ncommunity,\u201d said Kimberly Reeves, interim director of sustainability. \u201cThe\nrubrics both programs use to determine the overall environmentally beneficial\nstudent experience highlights our campus partners working hard to improve their\nprocesses, programs and commitment to a more sustainable UCCS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Princeton Review tallied Green Rating scores for 695\ncolleges this year. Among its criteria for universities are considerations of whether\nstudents have a campus quality of life that is both healthy and sustainable; how\nwell a school is preparing students for employment in the clean-energy economy\nof the 21st century; and the environmental friendliness of the university\u2019s\npolicies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scores for the \u201cCool Schools\u201d ranking were based on the STARS report created by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, which gave UCCS a Gold-level rating in 2018. Researchers rank colleges and universities based on academic criteria such as an environmentally focused curriculum, student engagement with environmental activism, renewable energy and waste management operations and schools\u2019 planning and administrative standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the \u201cCool Schools\u201d ranking, UCCS scored 74.46 points,\nbesting other Colorado institutions including Colorado College (67.22 points)\nand Western Colorado University (47.41 points). Colorado State University\nplaced first in the state with 84.68 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe continue to be inspired by the creative and innovative\nways that North American colleges and universities are furthering and deepening\ntheir work to address the climate crisis and create a sustainable future, even\nin light of the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic,\u201d said Katie\nO\u2019Reilly, Sierra magazine\u2019s adventure and lifestyle editor, in a release.\n\u201cEvery year, we see increased commitments to clean energy, reducing waste, and\ninvolvement from a wider geographic range of schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
