{"id":124813,"date":"2020-06-25T08:30:49","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T14:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=124813"},"modified":"2021-02-26T11:22:30","modified_gmt":"2021-02-26T18:22:30","slug":"virtual-town-hall-provides-updates-on-fall-semester-diversity-and-inclusion-efforts-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=124813","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Town Hall provides updates on fall semester, diversity and inclusion efforts and more"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Town-Hall-6-24-20.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Town-Hall-6-24-20-750x363.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-124833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Town-Hall-6-24-20-750x363.png 750w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Town-Hall-6-24-20-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Town-Hall-6-24-20.png 1218w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chancellor Venkat Reddy and campus leaders addressed campus in the third virtual Town Hall of the summer on June 24. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chancellor Reddy and a panel of campus leaders provided updates on topics including the fall semester, returning to on-campus work, strengthening UCCS\u2019 culture of diversity and inclusion and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Mark Kennedy also joined the session to offer remarks\non navigating the challenges COVID-19 has presented to higher education, recent\nwork to deepen the University of Colorado\u2019s commitment to equity, diversity and\ninclusion and statewide efforts to advocate for resources for Colorado\u2019s higher\neducation institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Updates presented by Chancellor Reddy and campus leadership\nincluded several key takeaways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Here\u2019s what you need to know:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Roughly 50% of classes will be offered on-campus in the fall, according to guidance from the El Paso County Public Health. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=1442\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Students will learn about the mode of delivery for each of their classes in mid-July by logging into their student portal. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=3240\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On-campus offerings will prioritize first-year classes and classes that require specialized equipment or in-person interaction. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=1329\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Classrooms will be equipped with sanitizing supplies and intensified cleaning protocols will be in place. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=3304\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Students, faculty, staff and visitors are expected to wear face masks while spending time on campus. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=2419\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Faculty members will not be required to wear face coverings while teaching so long as they maintain a 12-foot distance between themselves and students, according to the Colorado Department of Higher Education. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=1560\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Amenities such as the Kraemer Family Library, the Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center and dining halls will be open with social distancing and other health guidelines in place. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=958\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more >><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fall enrollment is down 14.9% from this time last year, an improvement from last week and last month. Faculty are encouraged to contribute to retention efforts for current students who have not re-registered for the fall semester. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=1247\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Work will resume on campus on a phased basis. Phase 1 will begin July 13 and will bring essential services and some critical services back to campus. Phase 2 will begin July 27 and will restore other campus and academic services. Phase 3 will begin August 10. It will welcome back students and resume academic and student activities. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=2672\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Employees who can continue to work remotely in the fall will continue to do so. Employees who are high-risk are encouraged to work with their supervisors and the Office of Human Resources on accommodations. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=1169\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Furloughs will take effect on July 1, 2020 and are scheduled to remain in place until June 30, 2021. If the university\u2019s financial status improves, furloughs will be lifted sooner. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=1909\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>UCCS will provide Chromebooks, loaned free of charge and equipped with microphones and webcams, to incoming students. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-xloPkGbwPM?t=977\" target=\"_blank\">Learn more &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he closed out the session, Chancellor Reddy remarked, \u201cIn so many ways, the success of our university during this challenging time depends on all of us pitching in \u2013 just as the success of larger movements for acceptance, diversity and inclusion depend on all of us, doing the work, together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAbove all,&#8221; he continued, &#8220;we have learned that resilience and resourcefulness are the keys to a brighter future. Sheer resilience is going to get us through this \u2013 and knowing that we are not alone. We are all in this together.
