Between 1933 and 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke to the nation in a series of evening radio addresses called \u201cfireside chats.\u201d On June 24, Chancellor Reddy offered a fireside chat of his own \u2013 addressing a national audience of higher education leaders on topics of student success, university culture and what the future of higher education will look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chancellor Reddy opened with a discussion of how UCCS\nadapted to remote learning during the spring semester\u2019s COVID-19 outbreak. He spoke\nabout both the barriers and opportunities presented by remote working and\nlearning. He also touched on the economic circumstances into which the Class of\n2020 graduated, which are similar to those of the 2008 recession, and the need\nfor universities and communities to work hand-in-glove towards strong employment\noutcomes for students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reddy encouraged leaders to embrace strong communication,\ncareful listening and a focus on creating a positive culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCulture, for me, is the most relevant thing for any\ninstitution,\u201d he said. \u201cPeter Drucker has said, \u2018Culture eats strategy for\nbreakfast.\u2019 You could have the greatest strategy, but if you don\u2019t have the people\nbehind you, with you, leading you \u2013 I think you\u2019re going to fail. So I have\nalways put culture and people first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reddy also considered what the university experience might\nlook like in five years, given the possibility of remote learning and work to\ncontinue into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCOVID-19 has disrupted our nation and world like nothing ever has,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been forced into this situation. Now, how do we maximize it? I think this is going to be a cultural challenge for all of us. It means that we need to have good systems, processes and policies on the campus, and good training for supervisors and chairs, who need to know how to work with remote employees. I do think we\u2019re going to continue to become more technologically-savvy. I think we can increase our diverse workforce through technology. We can serve our disabled populations, who can be a part of the university and workforce without ever having to leave their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he concluded his remarks by answering questions from the\naudience, Reddy encouraged leaders to stay humble \u2013 checking their egos at\nthe door, and intentionally empowering emerging leaders across student, faculty\nand staff bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is about our students\u2019 success, our faculty\u2019s success\nand our staff\u2019s success,\u201d Reddy said. \u201cThis is not about your success as a leader.\nTheir success is your success.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
