{"id":12158,"date":"2013-10-02T09:54:13","date_gmt":"2013-10-02T15:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=12158"},"modified":"2013-10-02T11:27:05","modified_gmt":"2013-10-02T17:27:05","slug":"benight-recognized-as-presidents-teach-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=12158","title":{"rendered":"Benight recognized as President\u2019s Teaching Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_12159\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12159\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0441.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12159\" alt=\"Pam Shockley-Zalabak, Chip Benight and Jim Burkhart examine &quot;The Seminar.&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0441-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0441-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0441-555x370.jpg 555w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pam Shockley-Zalabak, Chip Benight and Jim Burkhart examine &#8220;The Seminar.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Charles \u201cChip\u201d Benight, professor, Department of Psychology and director of the Trauma Health and Hazards Center, received a framed lithograph Sept. 28 as part of his designation as a President\u2019s Teaching Scholar.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting at the Heller Center for Arts &amp; Humanities, Benight joined 28 members of the group of CU faculty members chosen in recognition of their outstanding integration of teaching and research throughout their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Ann Shea, director, Faculty Teaching Excellence Program, presented Benight with a lithograph of \u201cThe Seminar.\u201d The artwork was created by Frank Sampson, professor emeritus of fine arts, CU Boulder, and is given to each member of the President\u2019s Teaching Scholar group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0438.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-12162\" alt=\"IMG_0438\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0438-555x370.jpg\" width=\"555\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0438-555x370.jpg 555w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_0438-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/a>The lithograph depicts a scholar with several class members of unruly animals, a recurring theme in Sampson\u2019s work and illustrative of his fantasy of human learning from, and interacting as equals with, animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the elephant, Chip?\u201d asked Jim Burkhart, President\u2019s Teaching Scholar and professor, Department of Physics.<\/p>\n<p>Benight and two other CU faculty members, Scott Douglass, associate professor, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, CU-Boulder, and Elspeth Dusinberre, associate professor, Classics Department, CU Boulder, were named President\u2019s Teaching Scholars in April. The group holds an annual retreat. For the past four years, the sessions were conducted at the Heller Center.<\/p>\n<p>The lithograph presentation precluded day-long discussions focused on \u201cSeismic Change\u201d in higher education and in the integration of teaching and research using the advent of MOOCS (Massive Open On-line Courses), as an example of change.
