As soon as he was named Chef of the Year by the American\nCulinary Federation\u2019s Pikes Peak chapter, Corey King was already gearing up for\nthe next challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King, who is UCCS\u2019 executive chef and associate director of culinary, won this year\u2019s Chef of the Year trophy and will keep a medal naming him as the ACF\u2019s Chapter Top Chef. But he isn\u2019t about to rest on his laurels anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is definitely going to be a fun-filled year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the new vice president of the ACF Pikes Peak chapter, King will also represent southern Colorado at the ACF\u2019s national convention, where he hopes to bring home the bacon \u2013 a collection of regional and national awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just weeks later, he is scheduled to cook at the ACF Pikes Peak chapter\u2019s Culinary Passport event, an annual fundraiser that will raise money for the Springs Rescue Mission. The funds raised through ticket sales and a silent auction will go directly to the nonprofit, which provides food and shelter to the homeless of Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to raising funds for local nonprofits, King is also adding global initiatives to his plate. He recently worked with Del Monte Foods, where he helped brainstorm how global food corporations can contribute to sustainability efforts on an international scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, he\u2019ll work with another symposium to represent \u201cchefs who are trying to change the world.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSustainability is a big movement on this campus, but it\u2019s still localized,\u201d King said. \u201cWe need to work with global companies to fight the global fight. If we\u2019re having food strife throughout the world \u2013 and we are \u2013 then we need to take that globally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drive to do good through food is a deeply personal one for King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLast year I battled severe depression,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce I dug myself out of that, helping others became my focus, both professionally and personally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for King, mixing food and philanthropy at the events he hosts is a recipe for success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverybody has to eat,\u201d he said, \u201cso everybody comes out to\nsupport them. And the better the event, the more people feel like they can\nsupport your cause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing is for sure: this chef on a mission isn\u2019t stopping\nhis work \u2013 in the kitchen or for good causes \u2013 anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
