A Sept. 18 campus concert will honor a UCCS instructor killed in a weekend traffic accident.<\/p>\n

Margaret (Marge) Mistry, senior instructor, Languages and Cultures Department, died Sept. 13 from injuries she suffered in a traffic accident on Highway 115 near her Penrose home. Student managers at web-based UCCS Radio will dedicate the concert in her honor.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarge was dedicated to this campus, to Hispanic culture, and to UCCS Radio,\u201d Brandon Ortega, student manager, UCCS Radio, said. \u201cIt is fitting that we pay honor to her many contributions by dedicating this concert in her honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mistry, 75, taught Spanish at UCCS beginning in 1991 following her retirement from Colorado Springs School District 11 where she taught at Mitchell High School. She co-founded UCCS Radio as an online radio station in 2003 and continued to serve as faculty adviser to the station. She founded a UCCS chapter of\u00a0 Sigma Delta Pi, Spanish National Honorary Society, last spring. She earned a Ph.D. in education from CU-Denver in 2012 and took classes from both UCCS and CU Denver beginning in 1975.<\/p>\n

The free concert in the Upper Plaza begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 and will feature Ryan Flores, a 2013 UCCS alum, and headline act Jacque Lynn Herrera. Flores will begin at 6 p.m. and Lynn at 7 p.m. Parking is free in lot 4 between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

Flores is a bilingual performer who performs Tango-infused music. Herrera is one of the hottest bilingual acts in the San Francisco bay area. She has released five albums, two of which are in Spanish, and has toured the country performing alongside some of music\u2019s greatest talents. For this concert she will perform tributes to iconic Hispanic singers including Selena, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, and Paulina Rubio.<\/p>\n

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and recognizes the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States. Event co-sponsors are the UCCS Multicultural Office for Student Access, Inclusiveness and Community, Office of Student Activities, the Faculty Minority Affairs Committee, Kraemer Family Library, UCCS Office of Diversity and Inclusiveness, and the Quality Suites Garden of the Gods.<\/p>\n

UCCS Radio started in 2003 as a project undertaken by the UCCS Chapter of the ACM, the Computer Science Professional Association. The establishment of the radio station was made possible by a grant by the UCCS Technology Fee Committee.<\/p>\n

In 2005, the UCCS Internet Radio Station became an official organization within the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. The Internet Radio Station has an associated Student Club which performs many of the activities needed for day-to-day operation.<\/p>\n
