When Nick Lockwood, director of orientation and new student\noutreach, was asked to describe what it felt like to win the Employee of the\nQuarter award this January, he replied: \u201cHumbling.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockwood continued, \u201cThat was my immediate sense. I was\nhumbled. There are so many other things that people do as units, as teams and\nas a community here at UCCS that support our efforts in Orientation. There are\nso many other people behind the scenes doing important work that deserve\nrecognition, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His colleagues in the Office of Admissions, several of whom\nnominated Lockwood for the award, seem to have anticipated this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Chris Beiswanger, director of Admissions, wrote in his\nnomination letter, \u201cIf you pick Nick for this award, he\u2019s going to deflect all\nthe positive energy towards the others around him. He\u2019ll say that he\u2019s lucky\nand fortunate to be surrounded by the people he has. He\u2019ll never take the\ncredit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beiswanger continued, \u201cBut I\u2019d tell him that this is one\ntime he must take the credit, because it is we who are fortunate. It is we who\nare constantly lifted up by his positive influence. It is we who are better\nbecause of him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockwood has implemented improvements across the board in Orientation. He\u2019s worked to build an orientation program at UCCS that takes into account the first-year experience as a whole \u2013 from the anxiety of transitioning into a new environment to educating first-year students on what it takes to have a successful college career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with orientation program coordinator Hailey Santonastaso, Lockwood recently won the CU Innovation and Efficiency Award Expo for creating an orientation mobile app. He creates opportunities for departments across campus to connect with new students, and he and his student workers meet frequently with the Department of Student Life to learn how to improve the orientation program year over year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Nick never rests on his accomplishments, and never takes credit,” Beiswanger wrote in his nomination letter. “He is always evaluating and enhancing UCCS Orientation in ways never thought of before. Then he reflects and finds new ways to make small refinements that have big impacts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps most notably, Lockwood is the driving force behind critical improvements in the online orientation process for new and transfer students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, new UCCS students who completed the online\norientation program were often stuck in limbo for several days. They couldn\u2019t register\nfor classes, get connected with their academic advisor or even matriculate\nfully into the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockwood worked to change that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnline orientation is an access point for students who have\nconflicts in attending new student orientation,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe have\nstudents from different states completing online orientation, all the way down\nto students who may be local, but who have families or full-time work that\nmakes it really challenging to get to campus. By collaborating across campus, we\nwere able to identify some of those pain points for our students and streamline\nthat process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of Lockwood\u2019s efforts to remove barriers for new students,\nit now takes less than a business day for students to get access to resources\nat UCCS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow we see that orientation becomes less of a cause for concern,\u201d\nLockwood said. \u201cConnecting with an academic advisor and registering for classes\n\u2013 it helps new students feel like they\u2019re a part of the UCCS community from day\none.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even more than his work to streamline and improve orientation\nat UCCS, Lockwood\u2019s staff and colleagues highlight his dedication to programs\noutside of his office \u2013 as well as his kindness, patience and easygoing positivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNick is always willing to assist anyone on the UCCS campus,\u201d\nseveral staff members wrote in a combined nomination letter. \u201cIn fact, he often\njumps at the opportunity \u2013 shown from his time volunteering in employee searches\nand staff committees and participating in Clyde\u2019s Kick-off, Premiere Night,\nSmart Moves and Housing move-in. Nick also lends his strengths to teach Gateway\nProgram Seminar classes to first-year students throughout the academic year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They continued, \u201cWe cannot think of anyone more deserving\nfor this award. Over the past five years, Nick has taught us the importance of\npatience, collaboration, and what a student focused value truly means. His only\narea of growth is to learn how to acknowledge his professional influence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recognition of his efforts, Lockwood will receive a $100\nstipend, three months of a free and reserved parking space, a $40 voucher to\nthe UCCS Bookstore and one day of administrative leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
