UCCS conferred a record 1,068 degrees to students, and more than 500 graduates joined 6,000 family, friends, faculty and staff in the fall commencement ceremony Dec. 20 at the Broadmoor World Arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UCCS awarded 15 doctoral degrees, 234 master\u2019s degrees and 819\nbachelor\u2019s degrees, a new record for the fall and summer commencement ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chancellor Venkat Reddy, CU President Mark Kennedy and this\nyear\u2019s distinguished alumnus Matt Carpenter \u201906 shared words of wisdom with the\nnew graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CU President Mark Kennedy addressed graduates with his personal words of wisdom.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Following a quotation by the poet William Butler Yeats, Kennedy told graduates, \u201cKnow that we believe the best of each of you. Let your light shine by believing the best in others, getting them to swing their lanterns higher. Become a bearer of CU’s torch, a center of her influence, a promoter of her spirit. Make us CU proud.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reddy encouraged students to embody the values of UCCS in\ntheir personal and professional lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former student body president Sierra Brown formally initiated graduates into the Alumni and Friends Association.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe challenges of our world are ever present,\u201d he said. \u201cAs\nindividuals, we must embody the values of the university in our personal and\nprofessional lives. We ask our graduates to do the same. We will use our\ndifferences and agreements to advance our community, our nation \u2013 and the\nworld.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carpenter (MPA \u201906) spoke to the class of 2019 as the 11th\nannual distinguished alumni. Carpenter is the executive vice president, chief\noperating officer and corporate secretary for El Pomar Foundation in Colorado\nSprings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his remarks, he memorably walked students through the\nplot of the cult-classic film Galaxy Quest to illustrate his advice for UCCS\u2019 graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chancellor Venkat Reddy invited students to stand if they were a first-generation student, worked during their time in school, transferred to UCCS from another institution and more.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMake your community where you live a better place,\u201d he advised graduates. Quoting the film, he concluded, \u201c\u2018Never give up, never surrender.\u2019 Your community needs you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judy Bell, the recipient of the CU Distinguished Service Award, was also recognized at the ceremony for her service to UCCS as one of the most respected leaders in golf worldwide. So were the 10 silver graduates in attendance \u2013 members from the Class of 1994 who returned on the 25th anniversary of their graduation to celebrate commencement with the UCCS community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
