Chris Boles was nominated by fellow Lockheed Martin interns as a winning contender for the firm’s nationwide “Most Influential Intern” competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Chris Boles was one of 2,500 interns hired by Lockheed Martin this summer. He was also named one of the top 10 most influential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This summer was the second in a row that Boles, a senior computer engineering major, spent interning at the aerospace and defense company\u2019s Denver location. After a first summer internship in IT, he switched to software development for the second. He spent his time building an app to help chemical engineers at the Kennedy Space Center efficiently record chemical data into a searchable database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he built strong connections with the interns he worked\nwith \u2013 connections that ultimately landed him a winning nomination in Lockheed\nMartin\u2019s Most Influential Intern contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boles recalls that working in a large conference room with the\noffice\u2019s other interns was a highlight of the internship experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really enjoyed working in the conference room with other\ninterns because I could interact with other people close to my age, and learn\nfrom them as well,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m from Georgia, but I go to school out here in\nColorado, and they\u2019re all from different places as well. I loved seeing how\nthey brought their different experiences to the Lockheed Martin culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boles didn\u2019t just connect with his fellow interns at the Denver\noffice. He spent time working on a side project with intern team members from California,\nNew Jersey and Puerto Rico, and planned events for Lockheed Martin interns\nacross Colorado. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By working with so many interns across the country, Boles made\na name for himself \u2013 in a good way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI was always that\nperson who was super professionally dressed, but I stood out,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes\nI would wear these bright red shoes. And I ended up being nominated [for the\nMost Influential Intern contest] by many of the interns I was working with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interns across the country nominated 170 of their peers for\nthe award. They were asked to name two traits that nominated intern possessed\nthat set them apart from the rest. They presented cases to a panel of judges illustrating\nwhy their peer deserved the recognition. Lastly, they were asked to describe the\nintern\u2019s most admirable quality by answering the question, \u201cOut of thousands of\ninterns dispersed across different locations and business areas, what about\nthis intern makes you go \u2018wow\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 interns won the distinction of \u201cmost influential intern\u201d \u2013\nincluding Boles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really believe it at first,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was one of the days that I wore bright red shoes to stand out, and I came into the conference room, and my manager told me, I\u2019m ready to have that meeting with you \u2013 can we do it somewhere more private? She made it sound serious, and I was really nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He continued, \u201cWe walked into the cafeteria and I saw my\nwhole team looking at me and clapping. They had gifts for me. I thought they\nmust be offering me my return offer for an internship next summer. Then they\ntold me that I\u2019d won the competition, and I was like, \u2018What?\u2019 It didn\u2019t process\nuntil after all of that was done. I went back to my desk holding all of the\ngifts, and the director of the program was there, and it finally made an\nimpact. I was just so surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having been named an influencer as an intern, Boles is excited to pursue computer engineering full-time after he graduates in December 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI ultimately want to do software,\u201d he said, \u201ceither for\nLockheed or for another company out there. I might try a new internship just to\nsee how working for a defense contractor is different than working for a\ncompany like Google.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He credits his internships with Lockheed Martin as teaching\nhim tangible skills that have applications outside of the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
