{"id":116646,"date":"2019-10-25T09:12:29","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T15:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=116646"},"modified":"2019-12-26T15:29:21","modified_gmt":"2019-12-26T22:29:21","slug":"school-of-public-affairs-students-win-big-at-first-american-criminal-justice-association-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=116646","title":{"rendered":"School of Public Affairs students win big at first American Criminal Justice Association competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_116651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116651\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_32371.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-116651\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"555\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Six students in the UCCS chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association netted seven awards in their first regional competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Six students in the School of Public Affairs&#8217; criminal justice program traveled to Hays, Kansas this October for their first&nbsp;American Criminal Justice Association regional competition.<\/p>\n<p>Facing competitors from&nbsp;nine states&nbsp;\u2013 including Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming&nbsp;\u2013 the Mountain Lion team achieved wins in firearms, several academic areas and physical agility.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116652\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116652\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-24-at-3.31.51-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-116652\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The students won recognition in firearms, several academic areas and physical agility.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each of the students is a member of the UCCS chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association, an extracurricular organization that provides educational and professional development in&nbsp;criminology and criminal justice. The UCCS chapter was established just this fall, with instructor John Whalen leading the student team throughout the semester in preparation for their first regional competition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Needless to say,&#8221; said School of Public Affairs dean George Reed, &#8220;after such a strong performance, the students are excited about next year\u2019s competition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He continued, &#8220;In the end, it is really not about winning trophies. It is very much about learning, performing under pressure and developing the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the criminal justice professions.
