{"id":116135,"date":"2019-10-04T13:15:23","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T19:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=116135"},"modified":"2020-06-11T09:18:31","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T15:18:31","slug":"uccs-police-joins-other-cu-departments-in-the-one-mind-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=116135","title":{"rendered":"UCCS Police joins other CU departments in the One Mind Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/police-pikes-peak.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-33229\" src=\"\" alt=\"UCCS police car\" width=\"740\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The police departments that patrol all four University of Colorado campuses have signed a pledge to participate in the International Association of Chiefs of Police\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiacp.org\/projects\/one-mind-campaign\">One Mind Campaign<\/a>. This includes the CU Boulder, UCCS and Anschutz Medical Campus police departments, as well as the Auraria Police Department, which provides police services for the CU Denver campus. The campaign requires police departments to complete certain steps that aim for successful interactions between police officers and persons affected by mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUCCS Police believes the One Mind Campaign will help our department to better understand the complexities of mental health calls for service,\u201d said Marc Pino, chief of the UCCS Police Department. \u201cWe are excited by this partnership to better respond to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To complete the One Mind Campaign, police departments must pledge to implement the following steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Establish a sustainable partnership with one or more community mental health organization(s)<\/li>\n<li>Develop and implement a policy addressing police response to persons affected by mental illness<\/li>\n<li>Train and certify all of the agency\u2019s sworn officers in mental health first aid or other equivalent mental health awareness program<\/li>\n<li>Provide Crisis Intervention Team training to a minimum of 20 percent of the agency&#8217;s sworn officers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe all know how important it is for our officers to understand how to help people we encounter who may be dealing with mental illness,\u201d said CU Boulder Police Chief Doreen Jokerst. \u201cBy completing this program, we are committing to provide the best service to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randy Repola, police chief at the Anschutz Medical Campus added that both sworn police officers and civilian staff will receive the training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartnering with community mental health efforts is consistent with our campus\u2019 priority to escalate work in mental health and wellness,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are acutely aware of the need for trained officers who are prepared to interact with persons experiencing mental health crisis in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the One Mind Campaign guidelines, law enforcement agencies have 12 to 36 months to implement the four promising practices.
