The Steel & Silver Series traveling trophy will remain at UCCS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

For the 11th time in its 14-year history, the UCCS Athletic Department claimed the Steel & Silver Series all-sports competition cup against Colorado State University-Pueblo. UCCS outscored the ThunderWolves 49-20 during the 2018-19 year. The 49 points and the 29-point differential are the most in the 14 years of the competition cup.<\/p>\n

“Keeping the Steel and Silver Trophy on our campus is something that I know brings a great amount of pride to everyone at UCCS,” said Nathan Gibson, executive director of athletics. “We have a spirited rivalry with CSU-Pueblo and, each time we match up with the ThunderWolves, we know there are Steel and Silver points on the line. I appreciate the efforts made by all of our teams and am extremely proud the Steel and Silver Trophy will stay at UCCS.”<\/p>\n

The all-sport competition awards four points for each of the sports that both schools sponsor. Regular season meetings are scored in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, women’s lacrosse and softball, while the conference championship results are used to score men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf. Five points are awarded to the institution with the highest GPA among those sports for student-athletes who competed during the academic year.<\/p>\n

The first institution to tally 35 points each year wins the Steel & Silver trophy. The Mountain Lions sealed the 2018-19 trophy on April 23 after the men’s golf team placed fourth at the RMAC Championship Tournament.<\/p>\n

The Mountain Lions’ women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track & field, men’s indoor track & field, softball, men’s golf, women’s outdoor track & field and men’s outdoor track & field programs each earned four points toward the total, while the men’s and women’s basketball teams split with the Pack to notch two points each. UCCS added five points last week after besting CSU-Pueblo in academics. The Mountain Lions achieved a 3.256 GPA as a department for the 2018-19 academic year.<\/p>\n

The trophy is on display on the second floor of the Gallogly Events Center.<\/p>\n

The competition series began in 2005-06 with UCCS winning the first nine years. The ThunderWolves won the trophy three times in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 before the Mountain Lions reclaimed the trophy last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
