{"id":10877,"date":"2013-05-16T11:18:41","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T17:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=10877"},"modified":"2013-05-17T09:59:55","modified_gmt":"2013-05-17T15:59:55","slug":"regent-emeritus-bishop-feted-at-campus-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=10877","title":{"rendered":"Photo feature: Regent emeritus Bishop feted at campus event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CU Regent Emeritus Tillie Bishop was honored for his 38 years of public service during a reception Thursday in Dwire Hall.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10878\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Bishop-solo.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10878\" alt=\"Tillie Bishop\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Bishop-solo-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tillie Bishop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bishop and his wife, Pat, were toasted by current and former members of the Board of Regents, elected officials, and UCCS administrators who used words such as statesman, mentor and leader to describe the legendary 78-year-old legislator from Grand Junction.<\/p>\n<p>But it was Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak who recognized Bishop as a hometown hero, noting that both Tillie and Pat Bishop were raised in Colorado Springs and attended Colorado Springs High School \u2013 now Palmer \u2013 before moving to the Western Slope where they made a lasting impact. For more than 30 years, Tillie Bishop held administrative positions at Colorado Mesa University, dating to a time when it was a two-year college. Pat Bishop spent more than 30 years as a public school educatior.<\/p>\n<p>Calling his wife the \u201cspeaker of the house\u201d as well as \u201cchair of the budget committee,\u201d Tillie Bishop shared credit for his success with Pat and cited their 60 year marriage as a cornerstone of his personal and professional success. He also cited the faculty each of the CU campuses for building a great university.<\/p>\n<p>Tillie Bishop was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1970 and served in both the House and Senate for 24 years, the last six as senate president pro tem. He is the fourth-longest serving member of the Colorado General Assembly in Colorado history and also served as a Mesa County commissioner. His six-year term to the Board of Regents ended in 2012 when, citing health concerns, he did not run for reelection.<\/p>\n<p>As a legislator, Tillie Bishop was known for his support for education as well as for being what CU President Bruce Benson called a \u201ccommon sense conservative.\u201d He introduced 736 bills during his time in the General Assembly and 456 were signed into law.
