{"id":10864,"date":"2013-05-16T10:24:23","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T16:24:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=10864"},"modified":"2018-01-12T08:29:39","modified_gmt":"2018-01-12T15:29:39","slug":"commencement-ceremony-splits-to-accommodate-large-class-size","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=10864","title":{"rendered":"Commencement ceremony splits to accommodate large class sizes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in UCCS history, colleges will be split between two commencement ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. May 24 at the Colorado Springs World Arena.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/timeline1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10866\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/timeline1-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"timeline1\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/timeline1-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/timeline1-555x383.jpg 555w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/timeline1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The 11:30 a.m. ceremony will feature bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s and doctoral degree graduates from the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The 3:30 p.m. ceremony will feature bachelor&#8217;s, master\u2019s and doctoral degree recipients from the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the College of Business and Administration, the School of Public Affairs, the College of Education and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.<\/p>\n<p>The new format will ensure that the number of guests each graduate can bring is not limited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our students bring 10 or 12 people to commencement,\u201d Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. \u201cI simply refuse to limit the number of family members and friends who come to commencement to celebrate our students\u2019 success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Office of Admissions and Records, almost 1,200 students completed degree requirements during the spring semester and are eligible to participate in the formal ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>CU and UCCS dignitaries attending will include members of the CU Board of Regents, CU President Bruce Benson, Shockley-Zalabak and Tucker Hart Adams, a local economist and this year\u2019s recipient of the Distinguished Service Award.<\/p>\n<p>Participating commencement staff should arrive at the World Arena by 9:15 a.m. for the first ceremony and 1:15 p.m. for the second. \u00a0Participating faculty should arrive no later than 10:45 a.m. for the first ceremony and 2:45 p.m. for the second ceremony, unless notified otherwise based on specific duties.<\/p>\n<p>While the new format will make for a long day, Shockley-Zalabak sees the change as a sign of the university\u2019s growth and success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that we can\u2019t even fit in the World Arena because we\u2019ve got over 10,000 people coming is testament to the work we do,\u201d Shockley-Zalabak said. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I find invigorating, exciting and tiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both ceremonies will be live-streamed online and rebroadcast on Comcast Channel 20 and Falcon Broadband Channel 77.
