{"id":10494,"date":"2013-04-23T13:17:05","date_gmt":"2013-04-23T19:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=10494"},"modified":"2013-07-15T11:34:29","modified_gmt":"2013-07-15T17:34:29","slug":"uccs-faculty-member-honored-as-exceptional-educator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=10494","title":{"rendered":"UCCS faculty member honored as exceptional educator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three University of Colorado professors, including Chip Benight, professor, Department of Psychology at UCCS, were named 2013 President\u2019s Teaching Scholars in an April 23 announcement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10496\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10496\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Benight.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10496\" alt=\"Chip Benight \" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Benight-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chip Benight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The title of CU President\u2019s Teaching Scholar signifies the university system\u2019s highest recognition of excellence in and commitment to learning and teaching, as well as active, substantial contributions to scholarly work. CU President Bruce D. Benson solicits annual nominations of faculty for the designation, which is a lifetime appointment.<\/p>\n<p>The newly named scholars are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Charles C. \u201cChip\u201d Benight, professor, Department of Psychology, UCCS<\/li>\n<li>Scot Douglass, associate professor, College of Engineering and Applied Science, CU-Boulder<\/li>\n<li>Elspeth \u201cBeth\u201d Dusinberre, associate professor, Classics Department, CU-Boulder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Benight is founder and director of the CU-Trauma, Health &amp; Hazards Center, a cross-disciplinary center focused on extreme human events. His primary area of research interest is in human adaptation from trauma, including recovery from natural and man-made disasters, auto accident trauma, sexual abuse, domestic violence and bereavement. He has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is the prototype for what a mentor should be,\u201d Thomas P. Huber, professor, Geography and Environmental Studies, and a President\u2019s Teaching Scholar, wrote in his nomination letter. \u201cHis teaching and his research meld together, especially for his master\u2019s students and his colleagues in the Trauma Center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benight earned his doctorate in counseling psychology, with an emphasis in health psychology\/behavioral medicine, from Stanford University. He earned his master\u2019s degree in counseling and his bachelor\u2019s degree in business management from Arizona State University.<\/p>\n<p>Douglass is director and faculty-in-residence at the Andrews Hall Residential College, Engineering Honors and Goldshirt Residential Academic Programs. \u00a0He also is faculty director of the Engineering Honors Program and an associate professor in the Herbst Program of Humanities for Engineers. He strives to make literature accessible and relevant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScot is an outstanding teacher and researcher, a prize-winning Residential Academic Program Director, a highly valued colleague, and an inspiration and mentor to both students and faculty alike,\u201d Diane E. Sieber, associate dean for education, College of Engineering and Applied Science, wrote in her nomination letter.<\/p>\n<p>He earned his doctorate in comparative literature from CU-Boulder, his master\u2019s in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary and his bachelor\u2019s in cellular and developmental biology from the University of Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>Dusinberre teaches primarily Greek and Near Eastern archaeology. She played a key role in redesigning her department\u2019s art and archeology curriculum for graduates and undergraduates, and has authored three books.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDusinberre is a remarkably dedicated teacher and researcher with a passion for her subject of Greek and Near Eastern Art and Archaeology and a gift for communicating that passion to students, colleagues and the general public,\u201d Diane A. Conlin, associate professor of classics, wrote in her nomination letter. \u201cShe has inspired a whole generation of young archaeologists and art historians in our program both through her formidable expertise and keen intellect, and also through her caring and compassionate mentoring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She earned her doctorate in classical art and archaeology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; her bachelor\u2019s degree in classical archaeology from Harvard University.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; Jay Dedrick, CU System University Relations<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Three University of Colorado professors, including Chip Benight, professor, Department of Psychology at UCCS, were named 2013 President\u2019s Teaching Scholars in an April 23 announcement.
