Neil deGrasse Tyson\u00a0entertained and educated\u00a0more than 1,700 UCCS and Colorado Springs community members during an April 17\u00a0lecture at the Gallogly Events Center.<\/p>\n

Tyson,\u00a0one of the world\u2019s leading astrophysicists and former host of \u201cNova Science Now,\u201d spoke for almost\u00a0three hours about killer\u00a0asteroids, Pluto, \u00a0and the past, present and future of the United States space program.<\/p>\n

According to Tyson, space exploration in the 1960s and 1970s increased Gross Domestic Product and scientific research across the globe, resulting in a better understand of life on earth.<\/p>\n

“We went to the moon on the premise of exploring the moon, but what we did was see Earth for the first time,” Tyson said.<\/p>\n

After the lecture, Tyson took questions from audience members before moving to Dwire Hall for a book signing.<\/p>\n

The event\u00a0was co-sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and the Department of Residential Life and Housing.<\/p>\n
