Rigler earns Fulbright award to teach and research in Ireland

Jane Rigler, assistant professor of music, will spend the 2019-20 academic year teaching and researching in Ireland as one of the newest Fulbright Scholars. She will be based at University College Cork, in Cork, Ireland.

“At UCC, I will be working with graduate and undergraduate students in the Creative, Digital and Experimental Sound Practices programs, offering Deep Listening® methodologies through a series of concerts, workshops and other outreach and community events,” Rigler said. “All of the data and experiences from my teaching and research activities throughout this specific region in Ireland will contribute to a new chamber instrumental and vocal ensemble composition with interactive electronics, ‘Sounding the Ogham Stones.’”

Rigler is the co-director of the UCCS Music Program within the Visual and Performing Arts Department. She is a flutist, composer and Certificated Deep Listening® practitioner. Her compositions and performances often encourage the performers and listeners to play with hidden languages, recall ancestral songs, incorporate playful game techniques, and encourage the performers to imagine and improvise.

Rigler has received residencies at Civitella Ranieri, Montalvo Lucas, iEar@RPI, UCROSS, Hambidge and has completed three residencies at Harvestworks. In 2009-10, Jane received the NEA sponsored Japan-U.S. Friendship commission in which she spent six months in Japan collaborating in over 15 interactive and multi-disciplinary concerts throughout the country. The US Embassy organized a 10-concert tour and she was again invited back by the Chihan Art Project which commissioned her sound art installation “While You Sleep.”

“We are delighted that Jane can pursue this project in Ireland,” said Suzanne MacAulay, professor and chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department. “Jane is so deserving of this award and recognition. We hope that this will lead to an ongoing exchange between music faculty between UCCS and UCC after Jane’s residency.”

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers more than 400 different opportunities to teach, research and conduct professional projects in over 135 countries.
