A former associate dean for the College of Engineering and Applied Science and dean of academics at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School will be the new associate dean of the College of Business.
Robert “Rob” Block will begin as associate dean Jan. 17. He was selected following a national search. His appointment was announced by Venkat Reddy, dean, College of Business.
“I am excited to have Rob join our team. His extensive experience in both military and civilian leadership, strategic processes and enrollment growth will be a tremendous asset for the college,” Reddy said.
Block earned a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a master’s degree in operations research from Georgia Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in operations research from the U.S. Air Force Academy. Before joining the engineering dean’s office, he was the dean of academics for the Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Block has also held numerous positions as an active duty Air Force officer including logistics operations research analyst, scientific analyst and financial analyst. He achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring from the USAF.
He earned numerous awards from both the military and private organizations including AFSPC Scientist of the Year, the USAFA Department of Mathematics Outstanding Science and Engineering Educator Award and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education Professor of the Year Award.
Block’s transition will include teaching, faculty reviews and onboarding with Cathy Claiborne, associate dean. The college will have two associate deans during the transition period. Claiborne will become interim dean of the College of Business Feb. 15 when Venkat Reddy, dean, College of Business, becomes interim chancellor.
Reddy thanked Claiborne who agreed to prolong her retirement to assist in Block’s onboarding and to serve as interim dean. He also thanked the search committee for its efforts.
