Steve Recca, executive director, Center for Human Security, School of Public Affairs, recently returned to campus after assisting the State Department’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and US Southern Command in the federal government response to Hurricane Matthew.
The hurricane made landfall in Haiti and eastern Cuba Oct. 4, hammered the Bahamas Oct. 5-6 and the southeastern United States Oct. 8.
Working from Miami, Recca managed information flow to relief workers in Haiti, providing them satellite images of the storm, weather reports, damage reports and reports of cholera outbreaks.
“I wasn’t out in the worst of it, that’s for sure,” Recca said. “But I was glad to support those who were on the ground bringing relief and saving lives.”
