Top piano students and piano lovers alike will have an opportunity play and photograph Vladimir Horowitz’s historic Concert Grand Steinway piano when it will be in residence at the Ent Center for the Arts Sept. 16-21. Pianists from throughout southern Colorado will be able to sign up for 30-minute private sessions to play the historic Steinway piano.
A Local Legends performance will take place at 6 p.m., Sept. 20, featuring celebrated pianists from around the Pikes Peak Region, including Broadmoor’s Music Director Ken Miller, Susan Grace of Colorado College and Kelly Zuercher and Anthony Tan of UCCS. In addition, celebrated pianist Anne-Marie McDermott will teach a masterclass at noon Sept. 21 to invited pianists, representing the best musical talent in the area. McDermott appears courtesy of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.
“This festival is such a great opportunity to gather our music community around one a storied musical instrument,” said Aisha Ahmad-Post, director of the Ent Center for the Arts. “This dialogue between the international and the local is very much what the Ent Center is all about.”
Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) is widely considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Known for his command of the great Romantic piano concerti, Horowitz played with nearly every major international orchestra and influenced generations of pianists after him. The Steinway & Sons Model D Horowitz Piano display provides an exceptional and rare opportunity for the public to engage with Steinway CD 503, the well-known piano that accompanied him on tour. The piano remained in Horowitz’ apartment in New York City and was used heavily in recitals and recordings throughout his career. It was his sole instrument taken on tour during the last four years of his life, including his famous return to Moscow in 1986.
