A UCCS-based literacy program was recently selected as one of 49 local nonprofits promoted by the Colorado Springs Independent as part of the newspaper’s Give! Promotion.
The Reading for L.I.F.E program, which provides no-cost reading assessments for children, is operated by Barbara Swaby, professor, College of Education. The program focuses on Colorado Springs schools where literacy rates are low and offers personal evaluation of at least 250 children annually. The program offers one-on-one evaluation, referrals to experienced tutors, and re-evaluation every four months. Swaby also provides two free reading clinics for children. Students who participate in the program show a six month improvement in their grade-level reading, according to Swaby.
