UCCS is among the best public regional universities in the Western United States, according to the editors of U.S. News and World Report.

In the 350-page 2012 college rankings edition, “ America’s Best Colleges,” to be released Sept. 20, the magazine’s editors ranked the overall quality of UCCS tenth in a three-way tie among public master’s degree-granting Western universities. Among all public and private master’s degree-granting universities, UCCS was ranked in the first tier and 39th overall.

The magazine’s editors also lauded the UCCS undergraduate engineering program, ranking it tied for eleventh in the nation among public engineering schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s, including military service academies. The overall national ranking for UCCS undergraduate engineering program, including public and private universities, was 27th.

The undergraduate business program at UCCS was ranked 154th among public and private universities.

For the past several years, UCCS has ranked in the top tier of all public and private master’s universities in the West. Master’s universities provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s degree programs and a few doctoral degrees.

The top public Western universities granting master’s degrees were California Polytechnic-San Luis Obispo, New Mexico Institute of Technology, Western Washington University, California State University-Long Beach, Evergreen State College, California State University-Pomona, California State University, Chico, California State University, Fresno, San Jose State University, Texas State University, San Marcos and UCCS.

“I am pleased that the effort of faculty and staff over many years to create a high-quality student experience is recognized,” Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. “We are committed to providing affordable, accessible, high-quality educational opportunities that allow southern Colorado residents to compete nationally and globally.”

In ranking more than 1,400 colleges and universities, U.S. News relies on quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality. Among the measures are student retention rates, graduation rates, and class sizes.
