Steel and Silver trophyWith five points awarded for the highest grade point average, UCCS won this season’s rivalry series against Colorado State University-Pueblo 29-16 and will retain possession of the Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy.

The series was initiated prior to the 2005-06 season to recognize the rivalry between the schools which are located 48 miles apart. It is named to honor the heritage of each community; Pueblo as a steel town and Colorado Springs  as a hub for the hard-rock miners of Cripple Creek and Victor.

The Steel & Silver Series is on a “winner-take-all” points system. In each of the 10 intercollegiate athletics programs that both schools sponsor – men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s golf, women’s cross country, softball, volleyball, and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field – the school that earns the most wins in head-to-head competition is awarded four points. If the head-to-head competitions are split evenly, each school is awarded two points.

The school with the best cumulative grade point average among student-athletes in the school’s common sports is awarded five points. The school with the most points at the end of the academic year is awarded the Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy with the presentation taking place in the home city of the winning school.

UCCS student-athletes in the common sports earned a cumulative GPA of 3.09. CSU-Pueblo student-athletes earned a cumulative GPA of 3.023. It was the highest GPA posted by the Thunderwolves since the Steel & Silver Series was initiated prior to the 2005-06 season.
