UCCS will have new police department leadership effective Aug. 26.

Brian McPike, executive director, Department of Public Safety, and chief of police, recently announced his resignation from the department. He will accept a new civilian position with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Marc Pino, police lieutenant, will serve as interim chief; Clay Garner, police lieutenant, will serve as interim deputy chief. Position search details will be announced at a later date. The changes were announced by Susan Szpyrka, senior vice chancellor, Administration and Finance.

“I am very thankful for Brian’s service to UCCS,” Szpyrka said. “I wish him the best of success as he continues to serve the Colorado Springs community in his new position with the Sherriff’s Office.”

McPike was named executive director in September 2014 after serving as interim director and police lieutenant. He joined the department in 2008 and previously served in law enforcement positions with the Greenwood Village Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

McPike led the department through the November 2015 fatal shooting of Officer Garrett Swasey, the first UCCS officer killed in the line of duty. He also led several upgrades to the department including the use of body cameras to record police interactions.

Pino joined the department in 2005 as a police officer, was promoted to sergeant in 2010 and to lieutenant in 2014. He earned a bachelor’s degree from UCCS and is working to complete a master’s degree in public administration.

Garner joined the department in 2001 as a police officer, was promoted to sergeant in 2005 and lieutenant in 2010.

  1. My name is Ryan Bennett. I have known officer McPike for well over 30 years. We were best friends in NM. We also went NMMI together. I just want to wish him the best.
